Alien Graffiti (A Personal History of Vagrant Intrusions)
[5200 words]

During a childhood vacation on a beach in Spain, Jemmi Nakuru and his mother witness the first appearance of the phenomenon known as a "Vagrant Intrusion".  It manifests itself as a "monstrous airborne scroll of cobalt-blue, crimson, and glittering saffron calligraphy."  Although he devotes his life to the study of these VI's, no explanation – either in terms of science or religion — can completely satisfy Jemmi's curiosity about their origin or meaning.

Among the Handlers or, The Mark 16 Hands On Assembly of Jesus Risen, Formerly Snake-o-rama
[16000 words]

In "Among the Handlers", the main character is a young man...in a heightened sort of religious background...with this emphasis on coming in contact with the holy spirit through snake handling, and that one cannot handle snakes unless one has the holy spirit upon one.  Maybe there's something in that, maybe there's something in my idea that if I'm really writing well or handling snakes, I have the spirit upon me in some sense.  Maybe the fiction itself is my snake-handling.  But for me, the fiction writing is subduing the serpent in one way or another.  And unless that spirit is upon me, it doesn't happen.  That's what the character in that story wants too, for the spirit to be upon him all the time, so that you can actually see it in the room, floating around like pollen or mist. — from Michael Bishop: Subduing the Serpent

This story stems from all the research I did on apartheid in South Africa.  I had hoped to write a novel, but didn't feel comfortable writing so long a work in a country that I had never visited.  This novella is my literary compromise.

Blooded on Arachne
[9000 words]
[A "Glaktik Komm" story]

Sixteen-year-old Ethan Dedicos is brought to the planet Arachne by the Martial Arm of the Glaktik Komm.  It is only through a rite of passage called "blooding" that he can become a probeship officer.

I wrote "Blooded on Arachne" while living in a small drafty house in Athens, Georgia.  My central concept — self-aware spiders drifting in lofty squall lines of silk over a rugged sandstone landscape — may have arisen as a wish-fulfillment fantasy.  Because I was employed as an instructor of freshman English at the University of Georgia, self-awareness in any guise was attractive to me, and my family and I used to take long, sanity-preserving cruises in the country. — from Preface to Blooded on Arachne

Blue Kansas Sky
[25000 words]

"Blue Kansas Sky" evolved out of a desire to recreate — not nostalgically, but both humorously and quasi-realistically — the experience of growing up in a small midwestern town and also out of hope of turning the fairy tale "Iron John" into a compelling quasi-mainstream narrative.
