This is an alphabetical listing with annotations of every song written by Stephen Sondheim (there may be some that I've been unable to verify.) Songs from unproduced projects are also included. Stephen Banfield's book helped in providing information on the early incarnations of some of the songs, and their relationships to subsequent songs. Mr. Sondheim has kindly provided further information.
While doing the research for this list, I came upon a great number of titles, for which there was very little information. Mr. Sondheim has cleaned the list of those titles for songs that were never written. I am in the process of compiling a list of these "phantom" titles.
Abbreviations used in the Notes field:
- FTH - the lyrics are included in Finishing the Hat (Collected Lyrics 1954-1981)
- AS - both music and lyrics are included in the All Sondheim music publications, followed by the volume number
- NR - no commercial recording of the song (to my knowledge) has been made.
Also, unless noted, all music and lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim (SS).
